Surely everyone has heard the news by now...
President Obama has become the first president in history to support same-sex marriage.
Many are saying that supporting gay marriage is nothing more than a political ploy, but if that were the case, it is certainly one with a huge risk.
While it's true that the majority of Americans support same-sex marriage, that majority may not play out across all states, and the state victories are the ones that elect the president.
Therefore, this logic simply does not float.
President Obama always supported civil unions with rights for gay partners, and I think this is just his way of taking a stand. This stand is doubly important in light of the vote in North Carolina which just banned gay marriage.
I'm very proud to be an American today, and I'm very proud of President Obama for defending basic human rights of all Americans.

- When will Christians learn that they do NOT have the right to force their beliefs on all Americans?
- When will Christians learn that they do NOT have the right to punish those who go against their beliefs?

Absolutely! Although I agree with his stance, I'm not sure if it was in his best interest to be outspoken about it from a getting re-elected standpoint. Anyone who claims he only said this to get re-election isn't paying attention.

I am a Christian and I agree with your post. It is not up to us to judge anyone or force our beliefs on them. That is not what God would do or want us to do. The bible tells us that no sin is greater than another. It also tells us that we have ALL sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Not some of us...ALL of us. We are all sinners and God does not look at sin by degree. We are all children of God. In the US, we have freedom of religion. That doesn't mean that we Christians have the freedom to force our religion on others, it means that all of us have the freedom to follow any religion we want. If more Christians would respond with love and understanding instead of judgement and nastiness, the world would be a better place.

I agree with you. One friend, who is not an Obama supporter,said she thought is was a lame platform on which to start his re-election policy. She does agree with gay marriage, but thinks it was a mistake to base a campaign on.
